2008 Advent Offering
|
|
During this time of Advent, we often think of
children and the needs of those children in our community and
throughout the world. With this in mind, the local and global
outreach teams have dedicated this Advent offering to
ministries that reach out to children and teenagers. |
A New Life for At-Risk Teens
|
| Advent Group Ministries is a social
service agency serving the needs of disadvantaged and addicted
teens and their families through Christian love and
therapeutic services. Advent is serious about keeping their
group homes in the best shape possible. Currently, all six
group homes need new carpeting. The estimated cost for this
project is $34,770 to carpet 12,194 square feet. This price
includes carpet and installation in all six homes. The local
outreach team hopes to raise $30,000 for this project. |
Children – Remembered and Embraced
|
| Chi Rho – House of New Life in
Constanza, Romania, has been implementing an integrated
approach to the health, placement, education and life-long
care of HIV/AIDS abandoned children for over a decade.
Constanza has the highest incidence of pediatric HIV infection
in all of Europe. The vision for Chi Rho goes beyond simple
shelter to a holistic provision of physical health, emotional
healing, vocational/special education and ultimately placement
in a loving foster or adoptive family. |
| Child Hope International in Nepal
reaches out in a similar way to street children abandoned by
unwilling or unstable parents, by the death of parents or by
sheer poverty. In this unique program, destitute children are
rescued from the streets, dumps and jungles and placed with
local Christian families who adopt and raise them as their
own. Each child grows up in a warm, loving, family environment
and begins to realize their true worth. |
| Achungo Children's Center in Kenya,
Africa also exists as a safety net to children left on their
own due to HIV/AIDS and poverty. The staff at Achungo educates
each child, provides spiritual training and guidance, warm
meals and lots of affection. They are literally saving kids'
lives by their efforts. |
| We hope to raise $10,000 for each Global
ministry during Advent. |
| Please make a note on your check or on the
outside of an offering envelope designating your donation for
the Advent Offering. |

Introducing Your Care Deacons
In case you are not acquainted with our ministry, we would like
to introduce ourselves and the work we do. We give active attention
to those members whose quality of life is, in some manner, at risk.
Many things assault our joy: illness or grief, worry and conflict,
addiction or unemployment, troubled children and parents, financial
and relational crises. As often and as ably as we can, we serve such
needs. There are many facets to our ministry, including visits to
hospitals and homes, personal calls and cards, memorial service and
grief after-care, support groups for job seekers or Alzheimer care
providers, AA and addiction recovery referral, and prayer
ministries. A confidential log of concerns is reviewed and prayed
over each week by your care deacons. We are always seeking to
improve our care of members' needs. During this season, as you
reflect on the quality of your life and the health of your
relationships, please consider your need for our ministry of care.
We are a team of 11 members, shepherded by Pastor Arvin Engelson and
supported by Barbara Silverstein. We hope you will feel free to
contact Barbara at 867-1000, ext. 209, with any concerns you or your
family might have. If you are drawn to the work we do, we will find
a place for your unique contribution.

Send Us Your Pictures
One of the nicest elements of our Sunday bulletin is the picture
that peeks through the arched windows of the cover. We know that
groups are gathering together on a regular basis for small groups,
ministry events, community outreach and social gatherings. As you
meet together, think about taking pictures for the bulletin and
newsletter. We would love to feature your gathering as a way of
encouraging other to get involved. Digital photos can be sent to Nicki
at the church office. For more information contact Nicki at
extension 224.
